The Late Greats Summer Mix 2006

Solstice Time!!! It is officially SUMMER…

It has become an annual tradition for me to compile a summery mix. This year, I set out to challenge myself by only allowing songs released in 2006. Hope you like.

1. Si*Se ~ My Sol

Latin rhythms are always a good place to start.

2. Jamie Lidell ~ What’s the Use

Clap your hands and sing, “Life may sometimes be sad, but its always beautiful”

3. Corinne Bailey Rae ~ I’d Like To

“Used to spend my summer having parties on the drive…”

4. Josh Rouse ~ Givin’ It Up

“Gotta tell you dear, that was a bad time I was on the ground crawling on all fours”
Sounds like a good time to me.

5. The Little Willies ~ I Gotta Get Drunk

“There's a lot of doctors tell me
that I'd better start slowing it down
But there's more old drunks than there are old doctors
So I guess we'd better have another round”

6. Guillemots ~ Trains to Brazil

I know he mentions “cold winter mornings” but the songs just sounds like summer.

7. Camera Obscura ~ If Looks Could Kill

I like how the drums sorta match the previous song; and it’s retro and new all at the same time.

8. Nelly Furtado ~ Somebody to Love (had to remove the link, sorry folks)

More Latin rhythms.

9. Beirut ~ Postcards from Italy

You can’t have a summer mix without a ukulele. Plus, trumpets.

10. The Walkmen ~ Louisiana

“I got my hands full all summer long” Plus, more trumpets.

11. Katherine Whalen ~ The Funnest Game

James Bond guitar line. Plus, THE MOST TRUMPETS!!!

12. Belle & Sebastian ~ Song for Sunshine

A classic summer-sounding keyboard riff.

13. Sister Nancy/Thievery Corporation ~ Originality

A little dub goes a long way in the summer.

14. Emile Simon/Thievery Corporation ~ Desert

I usually don’t put two of the same artists on one mix but these two songs fit perfectly together, almost like they should be one.

15. Imogen Heap ~ Goodnight and Go (radio version)

Bopping along to another summer song…

16. Regina Spektor ~ On The Radio

If you don’t want the incredible lyrics, just scroll down to the next song.

“This is how it works
It feels a little worse
Than when we drove our hearse
Right through that screaming crowd
While laughing up a storm
Until we were just bone
Until it got so warm
That none of us could sleep
And all the Styrofoam
Began to melt away
We tried to find some words
To aid in the decay
But none of them were home

Inside their catacomb
A million ancient bees
Began to sting our knees
While we were on our knees
Praying that disease
Would leave the ones we love
And never come again

On the radio
We heard November Rain
That solo's really long
But it's a pretty song
We listened to it twice
'Cause the DJ was asleep

This is how it works
You're young until you're not
You love until you don't
You try until you can't
You laugh until you cry
You cry until you laugh
And everyone must breathe
Until their dying breath”

17. Gnarls Barkley ~ Crazy (had to remove the link, sorry folks)

I guess you gotta have some Gnarls for the summer.

18. Sia ~ Where I Belong

“Shine
You're fine
See I will always have a smile for you my love
And stillWe will
Be ok and along the way we'll learn a thing or two”

19. Feist ~ Mushaboom (Postal Service Remix)

One of the greatest remixes of all time.

20. Tom Zé ~ Para lá do Pará

And we end where we begin, more Latin.

Other Mixes ~ Sleepier Baby Mix ~ Girls I (Wish I Had) Dated Mix ~ Songs That Describe How I Feel About My Wife Mix

this is such a fun mix, it's great. =) and i must say anything is hugely improved by the presence of guillemots' 'trains to brazil'.
