Songs That Got Me Thru High School ~ Marc from everyday life
The 80s were depressing. Especially for a scrawny effeminate boy like me.

tee-shirts tucked into pegged jeans; no sports, unless you count the marching band field shows at Friday night football games. I sang musical theatre and danced to choreographed medleys in the show choir.
As if this would make it all better, I played classical flute. A lot of classical flute. I mourned when Jean-Pierre Rampal died, my tape collection included Peter and the Wolf, and for Christmas I received a record album autographed by James Galway.
Today I present for you a selection from Flute Music by French Composers: Concertino by C. Chaminade. I memorized this opus in its entirety over my freshman and sophomore years of high school. I used it to try out for the Chicago Symphony Youth Orchestra, though didn’t get in. I didn’t win any competitions with it, either. But damn it, playing this song got me through high school. At nearly nine minutes in length, complete with cadenza, you might as well kick back, grab a bottle of Clearly Canadian
, and enjoy!

1 hullabaloos:
if it's any consolation, the Indigo Girls' version of Jesus Christ Superstar figured prominently in my high school musical salvation. As did the Hair soundtrack. I remember telling a friend i had memorized all of the words to "Colored Spade," to which she responed, hesitantly: "...um...that's great." I never spoke of it again.
I also clung to the Indigo Girls' album "Nomads, Indians, Saints." One song in particular features coyote yelps/bird calls (Welcome Me), for which i was chastised by my non-girl scout friends for listening to "freak music."
