The Late Greats Goes Sailing

The strange thing is I don’t like Randy Newman as a performer. His voice and piano tinkling kind of grates on me. But I like Randy Newman songs. Enter this compilation from Sugar Hill Records. Below are my three favs from this release. But all are worth checking out.

Allison Moorer ~ Marie

Guster ~ Memo To My Son

Kim Richey ~ Texas Girl At The Funeral Of Her Father

Dear Duke,

why don't you like my 'tinkling' and singing?

have you even heard my early stuff?

have you heard my really awesome album 'little criminals'?

sure, you get sick of it if you overplay it, but frankly, i just don't get why you don't like me...

and don't say 'different strokes for different folks' -

alright, you get points for being honest. i accept your admission that i'm a song writing fool - nobody has written more than me.

The ultimate Randy Newman covers album is, of course, Nilsson Sings Newman. I don't think I've heard anyone else do justice to his songs.

Since he's singing about characters, and many times his voice fits those characters, it is very hard to duplicate. I'm not up on Randy's recent work, but the period of 12 Songs through Land of Dreams is pretty solid.

There exists one other highly notable late, great Randy Newman cover -- Ray Charles' cover of Sail Away. It just can't be beat.
