Album Review ~ Smashing Pumpkins: Zeitgeist

My expectations for Zeitgeist were low. Which might be why I actually kind of like this album.
Everything that makes The Pumpkins The Pumpkins is present: thundering drums, guitars tuned a half step down, power chords racing up and down the neck board, whiny vocals, acute lyrics, a long song and a sweet sounding album closer.
The songs sequence is perfect.
I probably won’t spin the disc over and over. There is a time and a place for these songs. When I want to remember my last two years of high school and first two years of college, I will probably throw it on. Or when I am stuck in a traffic jam and I want to get even more pissed off.
I had to come up with a new rating for this album and add it to my sidebar. Please welcome, “Brand New Nostalgia”, which falls between: Ready for Grey’s Anatomy and Ideal Background Music.
Rating: Brand New Nostalgia =
Zeitgeist
(Confused about the ratings scale? Check out my sidebar.)
RIYL: mid-career Pumpkins or pumpkin pie

6 hullabaloos:
great post duke - i agree completely
I actually went to the record store to pick up Interpol's new album without realizing the Pumpkins' album was out, too. I picked it up only because they were one of my favorite bands in the 90s and expected it to be pretty bad, but wow, I am surprised. I've listened to it a few times now and with each listen it gets better. Like the Pumpkins' albums that defined my time in college, I believe this album might come to define Summer 2007 for me.
I only hope that something happens this summer to make it something I actually want to remember. It's been pretty dull so far!
I just don't get why you can't just listen to a record for what it is without immediately painting it with the nostalgia brush....I'm sick to death of hearing people debate "relevancy"....they are songs. Either dig them or not.
This record is way better than the blogger/hipster crowd will ever admit.
this album sucks so freakin bad and anyone who says otherwise is fuckin clown shoes
nothing even remotely interesting happens...
dull dull dull
oh and be sure to see them live cause they play the whole fuckin thing and barely played any of the old stuff...which is the only reason you would ever go to see them ..in closing let me say i love the smashing pumpkins and would go to the ends of the earth and back again to give them the benefit of the doubt
but this album disappointed me so greatly
that it has affected the way i listen to the older stuff...do yourself a favor and just let them be the gods they were in the 90's ...stay away from this album at all cost.......Fuck you Billy Corgen you go to hell ....you go to hell and you die!!!!! .......
What an idiot. I just saw them live and they played waaaaaaaaaay more old than new. The new songs they played fit in perfectly though. I think you should go to hell for taking someone's ticket that might have actually enjoyed it rather than telling Billy Corgan to 'go to hell'
What a fool.
Have a nice day :)
like i said..... fuckin clown shoes.....
