885 MMMM ~ Most Memorable Surf Band From Russia or My First Musikfest

885 Most Memorable Musical Moments
Even though the data collection phase is over (look for their playback to start Oct. 2), The Duke still has some musical moments to post. If you recall, I have been counting down my ten most memorable personal musical moments from oldest to newest.

10 ~ Most Memorable Concert I’m Embarrassed About

9 ~ Most Memorable Dance By an MTV VJ/Yo MTV Raps

8 ~ Most Memorable Music Featured On Tiny Toons

7 ~ Most Memorable Suicide During My Junior Year Of High School

6 ~ Most Memorable Lollapalooza

5 ~ Most Memorable Concert During The Early Stages Of The Duke’s Courtship Of The Duchess

And now on with this week’s post:

If you have been reading The Late Greats, you know I am a fan of Musikfest. But how did I come to love this 10 free music festival?

It was the summer of 1998. The Duchess and I were slaving away on Madeline Island. For our summer vacation, we flew back to PA. Besides meeting all of her family, I met Musikfest.

Her family seemed to be pleased with me. I was pleased with Musikfest: the festival foods, the arts, the crafts, and of course, the non-stop free music.

What I remember most about that first time? The Red Elvises. Four guys dressed in red suits playing surf music. Swaying their heads. Shaking their hips. Making all the girls swoon.

I didn’t really like them at first. They seemed too kitschy. Too much of a façade.

But then, I saw them next year. And in 2000. The Elvises became a guaranteed Musikfest act. A perennial favorite.

To best experience the band: dance with the rest of the folks, drink lots of warm beer and sing-a-long to the songs…

Hey, I didn't know anyone outside of California knew who the Red Elvises were. I used to watch them play on the streets of Santa Monica in the 90s. Fun stuff.

885 most memorable moments is kind of a long title, isn't it? You usually come up with some good titles of your own i.e. GPoHD, PTT, SS...why do you need to rip off WXPN's? Their graphic is dumb too. The very busy-looking kind of dumb.

And who could forget their AWESOME songs from the classic movie, Six-String Samurai!

These guys rock!

I saw The Red Elvises at Musikfest in 2006. I loved every minute. True they are a bit kitschy but they rocked so mightily that I forgot that and noticed they are true talents.
