Compare & Contrast

The big news in the Straw household: we got cell phones. Both The Duchess and I have abstained from them all our lives. We finally succumbed to the pressure. I would like to say we picked AT&T because they used The Band’s “The Weight” in a commercial. But it was because of their rollover feature.

It did get me thinking about all the different versions of this song. I LOVE that a lot of females tackle the tune. So here are oodles of females and oodles of others.

The Band ~ The Weight*

Aretha Franklin ~ The Weight

Cassandra Wilson ~ The Weight*

Joan Osborne ~ The Weight

The Staple Singers ~ The Weight

Deana Carter ~ The Weight

Michelle Shocked ~ The Weight (live)

Mr. BLOTTO ~ The Weight (live) > Rap (live) > The Weight (live)

Donavon Frankenreiter Band ~ The Weight (live)

Scarecrow Collection ~ The Weight (live)

New Riders of the Purple Sage ~ The Weight (live)

Dark Star Orchestra ~ The Weight (live)

Derek Trucks Band w/Susan Tedeschi ~ The Weight (live)*

Awesome post! Incidentally, Shannon Curfman also did a really powerful cover of "The Weight" on her debut album, which was recorded when she was still a teenager. Very impressive stuff. If I still had it, I'd send it to you.

Why, that's Duane Allman playing on Aretha's version!

There is a Lee Ann Womack version on Endless Highway - The Music Of The Band. Her version is pretty good (another woman singing this song - maybe women feel more weight than men!). But that cd in general is pretty blah, and not a place for a newcomer to The Band to start.

I'm putting in a write-in vote for the live version from The Last Waltz - I get the best of both worlds, with both The Band and The Staple Singers.

Cool concept you run here! I've long thought about doing this for "All Along the Watchtower". I'll have to check out your old Compare and Contrast posts.
