While I Break From My "No Weekend Posts" Mandate To Bring You The Winner Of The "I’m Not There" Soundtrack Contest AND A Track By Track Analysis
Thanks for making this the most entered contest on The Late Greats yet! Three cheers for your selves!
And three cheers for Edie, as she wins a copy of the soundtrack. Edie doesn’t have a favorite soundtrack (yet).
I’ve listen to all 160 minutes of this soundtrack and have these thoughts to share. Overall, I love the variety of Dylan songs. Not just a greatest hits collection. * = produced by Joe Henry and Duke approved.
Disc 1
1. Eddie Vedder and the Million Dollar Bashers: "All Along the Watchtower" Great leadoff track that sets the tone for the soundtrack.
2. Sonic Youth: "I'm Not There" Lukewarm on this one.
3. Jim James and Calexico: "Goin' to Acapulco" Jim James and his velvet voice takes me + Calexico to Mexico.
4. Richie Havens: "Tombstone Blues"* Richie does Dylan as well as Dylan does Dylan.
5. Stephen Malkmus and the Million Dollar Bashers: "Ballad of a Thin Man" Not a Pavement fan. Not a "Thin Man" fan.
6. Cat Power: "Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again" Disappointed. I was hoping for more from Chan. She stays too true to the original.
7. John Doe: "Pressing On"* John DOEs a solid.
8. Yo La Tengo: "Fourth Time Around" One of my favorite Dylan songs done by one of my favorite bands named after a Spanish baseball expression.
9. Iron and Wine and Calexico: "Dark Eyes" Sam + Calexico ALWAYS play well together.
10. Karen O and the Million Dollar Bashers: "Highway 61 Revisited" I grew up along Highway 61.
11. Roger McGuinn and Calexico: "One More Cup of Coffee" Desire area Dylan always brings a smile to my face even with some strange vocals.
12. Mason Jennings: "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" Outlaw country offspring outdoes himself.
13. Los Lobos: "Billy" No comment.
14. Jeff Tweedy: "Simple Twist of Fate" Everything Jeff touches turns to gold.
15. Mark Lanegan: "The Man in the Long Black Coat" The man in the long black coat screams from the trees.
16. Willie Nelson and Calexico: "SeƱor (Tales of Yankee Power)" Willie wins again.
Disc 2
1. Mira Billotte: "As I Went Out One Morning" I know nothing about Mira. I know I like this song.
2. Stephen Malkmus and Lee Ranaldo: "Can't Leave Her Behind" Destined for the --> button.
3. Sufjan Stevens: "Ring Them Bells" Sufjan makes this song his own by making it sound like every other Sufjan song.
4. Charlotte Gainsbourg and Calexico: "Just Like a Woman" Char sings it just like a woman should.
5. Jack Johnson: "Mama You've Been on My Mind/A Fraction Of Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie" A soon-to-be classic Jack Johnson classic.
6. Yo La Tengo: "I Wanna Be Your Lover" Yo hits anothe homer at its second at bat.
7. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova: "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" ONCE stars get off their soundtrack and into this one.
8. The Hold Steady: "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window" The Hold Steady are the perfect Dylan cover band.
9. Ramblin' Jack Elliott: "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues"* Jack rambles off a winner.
10. The Black Keys: "Wicked Messenger" Hands down, my personal favorite off the album.
11. Tom Verlaine and the Million Dollar Bashers: "Cold Irons Bound" Who? What song is this?
12. Mason Jennings: "The Times They Are a-Changin'" Mason maintains the integrity of this song.
13. Stephen Malkmus and the Million Dollar Bashers: "Maggie's Farm" Better than the lst Stephen track.
14. Marcus Carl Franklin: "When the Ship Comes In"* Plain, simple, beautiful.
15. Bob Forrest: "Moonshiner"* Best harmonica on the soundtrack.
16. John Doe: "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine"* Joe DOEs it again!
17. Antony and the Johnsons: "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" Not an Antony fan but like his take on this classic.
18. Bob Dylan: "I'm Not There" The man IS here, on this soundtrack.
You can still Listen here.
