Album Review Week ∞ Wayne Krantz: Greenwich Mean

As Album Review Week presses on, we welcome another guest reviewer. This time from Coconut Joe who is in the world’s greatest Avant-Folk group Coconut & The Duke.

I first heard Wayne Krantz play at a Donald Fagen concert. He played this solo on a song of DF's called "the goodbye look". It was perhaps the most interesting and moving guitar work I've ever heard. Very percussive sounding. What I heard made it clear to me this was someone who was an original - in a Thelonious Monk like way.

Since then I've been following Wayne around in his post 55 bar days. He is a person who is constantly, alomost dogmatically, trying to invent new musical experiences. A true improvisor at heart, he didn't even record his work in the begininning...

Story goes that one day this gentleman was sitting at the bar with headphones on and Wayne asked him "what are you listening to?" to which he replied "you". From then on the man regularly made recordings for Wayne. That is how the tracks from "Greenwich Mean" were made!

I would add that as a hardcore Steely Dan fan this is as close as I’ll get to mentioning The Dan on The Late Greats!!!

An old video of Wayne I like
