9 To Keep An Ear Out For In 2009 ∞ Monday Edition
Back in February 2007, I did a post entitled “10 To Keep An Ear Out For In 2007”. Last year, I missed my chance (a Duke Jr. expression). But now, in 2009, I am ready to make a pronouncement. Starting today and continuing the rest of the week (minus Thursday which is reserved for One Song Lost Recaps), we will examine who The Duke thinks will make a splash this year.
And since The Duke loves the ladies, we’ll start with three women:
Anya Marina
I have blogged about Anya before. And while I was guest blogging at Break Thru Radio, I said this:
“Who is Anya Marina? I don't know. Other than a fem on the verge of releasing her second album. Britt Daniel (Spoon) and Brian Karscig (Louis XIV) lent her a hand or two on this Jungian inspired album - "Slow & Steady Seduction, Phase II". The album comes out 12.9.08. Which is perfect timing. The album is perfect for holiday parties that don't want to use holiday music. The songs are sexy and mostly up-tempo. She reminds me a little of early Liz Phair. You may have heard the song below featured on Grey's. More proof that she is on the verge of people (yours truly) knowing who she is.”
I’ll add this today: Anya’s album is the sexiest album I have heard in years. It includes an excellent version of one of my favorite songs: Waters Of March. Listen and feel the sex appeal.

Eleni Mandell
Back in 2007, Ms. Mandell released “Miracle of Five”. One of my favorite albums that year. I said it was “the most relaxing release of the year”. In 2009, Ms Mandell is back. But she is far from relaxing. On February 17th, she’ll release “Artificial Fire”. I was lucky enough to get a promo of the album. It is stunning. Eleni has lovely, emotion-drenched voice. Whether singer torch songs (Miracle of Five) or an uptempo number about scorning a lover.

Jenn Grant
If Eleni has a lovely voice, Jenn Grant has a completely stunning, drop-dead gorgeous voice. She could sing the ingredients in a Twinkie and I would happily listen.
Her new album “Echoes” is just as luscious and orchestrated as her debut “Orchestra for the Moon”. She has a “sound” that has to come to fruition. Thirteen songs on Echoes and none are duds. Look for this one to be on my favorite list at year’s end.

2 hullabaloos:
i don't think i've ever commented on your blog before, but i absolutely love it.
i think we're musical soulmates.
thanks for introducing me to such great artists!
i'm finally seeing Neko Case in concert in April and I am soooo excited.
Have you heard Anya Marina's cover of that T.I. song, 'Anything you'd Like." Or whatever it's called, the one those kids did before the election!
Anya's also going to be on the new Josh Schwartz (The O.C., Gossip Girl) Alex Patsavas project Rockville, CA (http://www.rockvilleca.com/), so you can only expect her to get bigger after that.
